音楽は耳で聴くもの、耳で聴くとは振動により感ずるもの故、皮膚にもその波が伝わる．目で見る演奏はその姿や、風貌、衣装や演奏の仕方で全く別の世界が付加され、音楽そのものの持つ孤独性が薄れ、さらに純粋性すら損なわれる。
寧ろ、見せる音楽として別の次元の芸術の一つとしてオペラが存在する。
旋律に酔う古典オペラに比べ、現代オペラはユニークさを求め、単調。難解で、焦点が合わせにくく、聴く人が創り上げたい独自の即興の世界を拒絶されるじれったさがある。モーツアルトとベルクでは、演奏者は同じでも、客層は服装も年齢層も異なる。
オペラグラスを通して、ひいきの歌手を間近に引き寄せ、自分の世界でオペラに酔うのも醍醐味だろう。しかしオペラグラスがその効力を十分発揮できるのはやはりオペラハウスの広さ、容積による。観客席2000席以下の劇場ではオペ
ラグラスが観客をたやすく舞台に招き入れ、贔屓の歌手の傍らに立つ恍惚感を味あわせてくれる。
1967年に新築されたメトロポリタン歌劇場は5層で3800席を収容する巨大さ故に、客と舞台との距離が遠すぎて、洒落た可愛らしいオペラグラスでは、歌手の姿にはヴェール越しにしか近づけない。そのオペラハウスに通い続けた1968年からの2年間は その後のオペラの多様な味わい方を知る基盤となっている。音楽か、歌手か、舞台か、演出か、はたまた観客かと、時に応じ、思いがけない出会いを楽しむことになる。全曲、暗譜で指揮するカラヤンの「ワルキューレ」、一枚ずつ譜面を繰って誠実に音の世界を再現するベームの「ばらの騎士」は相互に優劣を問えないが、それぞれのオリジナリティを感じる創作の響きで魅了する。R.テバルディ、F.コレルリの声量たっぷりの美声にうっとりし、涙を流し、興奮の極で突然、手を握って来る隣りの客とも、感動を共有する親しさも生まれる。日曜ごとに正午の売り出しに並んでやっと購入できた宝物のチケットがもたらす恵み、賑わいのオペラ全盛の頃です。ロビーの２階には巨大なシャガールの左右２連の絵が壁を飾り、そこから覗くと中央の赤い絨毯の大きな階段を昇り降りするする着飾った女性たちの背中を堪能できる。シャガールによる演出は 舞台、衣装に及んで、上演の『魔笛』はモーツアルトの純な心に触れさせてくれる。オペラ狂には垂涎の的の歌劇場でもある。
ロビーの壁画といえば、シドニーオペラハウス（1547席）のオルセンの濃いブルー作品が横長に壁全体を占めているのが前に広がる海の色につながる。ジャカランダの花の色、緑のカーペットで敷きつめられ、ガラス越しには、シドニー湾に戯れる色とりどりのヨットが、明るい陽射しの中に見られるし、潮風を浴びて眺める中心街の夜景は南半球の夏の夜の夢、12月のたのしみ。
内部は美しい木肌（Brush box white birch）で仕上がっているが、あたりを見回すと空席が目立つ。右の後ろですごい「いびき」が聞こえてきたが、客の誰もから苦情も反応もなし。一幕を通して、爆音が続き、次の幕で後ろを振り返るとその人は消えていた。ほっとしていると、今度は左側の後ろから又も「いびき」こんな幸せな観客もいる。『真珠とり』に共演しての満足だろう。
サンフランシスコのオペラ（3146席）でのこと。背中に値札を付けて座っている女性、買ってきたばかりのドレスか、或は貸衣裳か、背中はすぐ後ろのお客にはまともに目に写る。たまらず声をかけて後ろから値札を切ってやる。女性は悪びれない。主役『トスカ』のソプラノは体調が悪いと言って病院に行ったとか、ロビーでは何人かがパソコンを開く。
ヨーロパではオペラハウスは比較的小ぶりで、オペラグラスが生きてくる。シシュットットガルト（1404席）は経済的に豊かな街らしく、幕間は華やかな
社交のサロン、演出は極めてモダンで６度も、その年のヨロッパオペラ一番に選ばれている。
ウィーンオペラハウス（1700席）は音楽を学ぶ者のために立見席（550席）を
用意して未来の音楽家誕生に助力している。劇場の外に、スクリーンで上演オペラの様子を実況しているが、足を止めて見る人は少なめである。ハプスブルグ家の誇りが名残るこの街に陳腐なスクリーンで煤けた映像は似合わない。
バイエル国立劇場は、酒場からすぐのところに在るので、飲んでからオペラかその逆か、ビールの匂いにあふれるこの劇場は傑出した指揮者たちが歴史的な演奏を残した所でもある。
テアトルレアルマドリッド（1746席）は200年に及ぶ歴史を狭い階段とロビーを通ると、中央の貴賓席が 昔のスペインの驕りを残して豪奢な飾りに囲まれてある。客席に座って、舞台に向かえば、近くの闘牛場から駆け付けてもよし、の気安さになる。
コヴェントガーデンのロイヤルオペラハウス（2256席）は名前が示すように、慇懃さがあるが、舞台を取り囲んでは、観客の一体感を醸し出して、盛り上がる興奮に酔うことが出来る。
１９６１年の東京文化会館のイタリアオペラ日本公演で、デル・モナコの『道化師』に狂喜して以来、オペラ三昧の年月がすぎている。『トゥランドット』の4幕で声が続かなかったドミンゴ、『連隊の娘』で高音が出ず引っ込んだパバロッティ、風邪の言い訳で途中キャンセルのカレーラスのリサイタル、くちパクになった『こうもり』のコワルスキー等々、人間ドラマがそこにある一期一会でもある。
